Individual study away advising appointments are 30 minutes long and most are held virtually through Zoom. See the Advising Overview page for instructions on how to schedule an appointment.

Late Policy: GEO advisors are not able to meet with students who arrive more than 10 minutes late to their scheduled appointment. If you are running late, please email your GEO advisor.

Prepare For Your One-On-One Appointment
Prior to booking an individual advising appointment with a GEO advisor, you should attend a Study Away 101 Session for a basic understanding of the study away process at Duke.
During your individual appointment, you'll be able to ask more specific questions and get customized advice for your individual needs and goals. We recommend that you have your top 3-4 program choices selected prior to your meeting. The advising appointment is meant to address specific questions and not a general program search.
Common topics students discuss with GEO advisors include:
- Questions about specific semester programs
- Identity, Culture, Safety & Security
- Health & Wellness
- Finances
- Academic or housing accommodations
- Research & Internship course approvals
- Petitions
We also recommend reviewing the following resources prior to your appointment:
- Study Away Program Recommendations by Area of Study. Search for programs based on your academic interests.
- Academic Overview. Start here to learn more about types of credit, course approvals, course loads, and more.
- Program Overview. Learn more about the different types of programs available to Duke students.
- Policies and Handbook. Review GEO policies and the student handbook.
