Open Application Limit

Students may only have a maximum of 3 applications open at a time per semester. This includes Duke-Administered, Duke-Approved, and petition programs. Students should rank their applications to indicate their preferences. View the Ranking Video for a step-by-step guide to how to rank your applications.

Pratt Students

Familiarize yourself with the policies outlined the Pratt School of Engineering Study Away Contract and be prepared to submit a signed contract at the time you commit to a program.

Step 1: Complete Application In MyGlobalEd

  • Search for your program on MyGlobalEd and click “Apply.”
  • Complete the General Application Questionnaire first. This allows us to request Dean’s and Conduct checks, which can take two weeks or more to complete.
  • When required, request recommendation(s) from a faculty member who knows you well by asking them via email (or in person).
  • Write and submit a personal statement. Read the instructions carefully, including the linked PDF document with program-specific prompts.
  • Upload an unofficial transcript to your MyGlobalEd portal. Pay careful attention to the instructions. Non-Duke Students should submit an official transcript. Non-Duke students should have an electronic transcript sent to globaled@duke.edu.
  • Once you have finished all application items and the Dean’s and Conduct checks are complete, your status will change from “Pending” or “Submitted” to “Pending Review.”

Step 2: In-Person Interview

  • Some programs may require an in-person interview. If that is the case, the program director will contact you via email.

While You Are Waiting To Hear Back

Note that you cannot apply for housing at Duke if you have an active application in MyGlobalEd.

You can register for courses on campus. You will be automatically dropped from these courses once you are placed on Study Away Agreement (see Step 5).

Use Duke DAAS's Accommodate Portal to send any housing or academic accommodations you want to use abroad to geosdao@duke.edu.

Step 3: Receive Admissions Decision From GEO

  • You will receive an email from GEO with an admissions decision. Timing on the admissions decision will vary from program to program.
  • Your status will change in MyGlobalEd from “Pending Review” to “Accepted,” “Waitlist,” or “Denied.”
  • If waitlisted or denied, you can apply to other programs. GEO advisors can help you.

Step 4: If Accepted, Next Steps

  • Read your acceptance letter carefully.
  • Change your status in MyGlobalEd to “Committed” to notify GEO of your intent to participate.
  • If you decide not to participate, change your status in MyGlobalEd to “Withdrawn.”
  • Pay a non-refundable $1,000 deposit to GEO via eCheck or paper check within 3 weeks of acceptance. If you receive financial aid, submit the Deposit Waiver Form in lieu of the deposit.
  • Once your deposit is submitted, your status will change to “Enrolled” in MyGlobalEd.
  • Complete any program-specific forms that appear in MyGlobalEd by the stated deadlines.

Step 5: Get Placed On Study Away Agreement

Study away agreement holds your place and standing at Duke while you study away. It’s vital for billing, financial aid, and registration. Don’t delay in completing these four items!

  • ITEM 1: Complete and sign the Participation Agreement with your parent/guardian. This form is sent to your email via AdobeSign.
  • ITEM 2: Submit the Duke Travel Registry at travel.duke.edu. Make sure to follow the instructions included on this item in your MyGlobalEd portal.
  • ITEM 3: Complete the online pre-departure orientation module in Canvas. This will take approximately 30-45 minutes.
  • ITEM 4: Complete the Medical Disclosure Form in MyGlobalEd.

Once these four items are complete, you will see “REG-100 Study Away” and/or specific Duke study away courses appear on DukeHub to indicate that you are on Study Agreement.
