General Information

Open Application Limit

Students may only have a maximum of 3 applications open at a time per semester. This includes Duke-Administered, Duke-Approved, and Petition programs. Students should rank their worksheets/applications to indicate their preferences. View the Ranking Video for a step-by-step guide to how to rank your program choices.

Pratt Students

Familiarize yourself with the policies outlined the Pratt School of Engineering Study Away Contract and be prepared to submit a signed contract at the time you commit to a program.

Step 1: Complete Worksheet

  • Attend a mandatory Duke-Approved Workshop (upcoming sessions available on the Events page)
  • Fill out the Duke-Approved Worksheet for the programs you wish to be considered for
  • Complete the General Application Questionnaire in your application portal. This allows us to request Dean’s and Conduct checks, which can take two weeks or more to complete
  • Decision outcomes include: approved to apply, waitlist, or redirect
    • Approved to apply by Duke does not ensure acceptance to the program; students must apply directly to the program (step 2) and receive their final admissions decision directly from them - Duke does not manage these programs.
    • Waitlist: GEO never releases the order of a waitlist. You may remain on the waitlist while you apply to a second program.

Step 2: Apply to Provider/Institution After Approval of Worksheet

  • If approved to apply, students should apply to the host institutions or providers that they are approved for
  • Students should send geoapprovals@duke.edu your home school authorization, if applicable
  • Host institution or provider must accept you into the program to secure placement. An open application does not ensure acceptance, these are not Duke managed programs.
  • Deadlines will vary. Pay attention to your program or institution-specific deadline.

While You Are Waiting to Hear Back

Note that you cannot apply for housing at Duke if you have an active application.

You can register for courses on campus. You will be automatically dropped from these courses once you are placed on Study Away Agreement (see Step 4).

Use Duke DAAS’s Accommodate Portal to request any housing and academic accommodations. In the portal, request your accommodations letter be sent to geosdao@duke.edu.

Step 3: Receive an Admissions Decision

The Duke Global Education Office is not involved in the admissions process for Duke-Approved programs and will not send admissions decisions.

  • Wait for an email or application system notification from your program/host institution. Timing will vary depending on the program/institution.
  • If waitlisted or denied, you can apply to other programs. GEO Advisors can help.

If Accepted, Next Steps

  • Notify your program or institution that you intend to participate. This may include paying a deposit.
  • In MyGlobalEd, digitally sign the Commitment to Participate. Your status will change to “Committed.”
  • Once you’ve signed the Commitment to Participate, you will be sent the Participation Agreement via AdobeSign. This must be signed by both you and a parent/guardian. Once this is submitted, your status in your application portal will change from “Committed” to “Enrolled.”
  • Pay attention to important emails, forms, and deadlines from both Duke and your program/host institution, such as housing applications (due within two weeks of opening), course registration, visa instructions, and more.
  • If you applied to multiple programs, notify the other programs that you no longer plan to attend, typically by withdrawing/canceling your application.

Step 4: Get Placed on Study Away Agreement

Study away agreement holds your place and standing at Duke while you study away. It’s vital for billing, financial aid, and registration. Don’t delay in completing these four items!

  • ITEM 1: Complete and sign the Duke Participation Agreement with your parent/guardian. This will be sent to your Duke email via AdobeSign.
  • ITEM 2: Complete the Medical Disclosure Form in your Duke application portal.
  • ITEM 3: Complete the online pre-departure orientation module in Canvas. This will take approximately 30-45 minutes.
  • ITEM 4: Submit the Duke Travel Registry at travel.duke.edu. Make sure to follow the instructions included on this item in your Duke application portal.

Once these four items are complete, you will see “REG-100 Study Away” appear on DukeHub to indicate that you are on Study Agreement.
