Ellie Sweezy, is a Political Science major. She studied abroad for a semester with the Duke in St. Petersburg program. She graduates in 2020.
On why she selected this program...
“Prior to studying abroad in Russia, I volunteered in Serbia through Duke Engage which increased my interest in Slavic culture. I had also begun studying Russian, but I only had one year of Russian under my belt. The requirement for the program was two years of Russian, so they made an exception for me. The two major factors in my decision to choose this program were that it allowed me to increase my Russian language and to enhance my understanding of the culture. I was particularly eager to learn about how the culture transitioned from socialism, but Russia’s rich artistic history in art, performance and literature also intrigued me. Lastly, I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone by living in a place that Americans are less likely to visit.”

On how her skills/knowledge have changed thanks to the program...
“My language skills improved exponentially. Taking classes in Russian and living with a homestay family gave me a lot of practice speaking the Russian language. At the end of the program I was shocked by my ability to understand the language. Additionally, exploring the country and my home-base of Saint Petersburg expanded my understanding of Russian culture. I took advantage of every opportunity to see a new museum or artistic performance. I attended many performances such as a waltz show at the philharmonic, an opera, and the ballet Cinderella. I loved going to the Hermitage, which is the second largest art museum in the world. It’s a beautiful building filled with an amazing collection of art. By pairing this curiosity with my day-to-day interactions, I came away with an improved understanding of Russia culture.”

On what surprised her or turned out differently than expected...
“Given the historical and current relations between the U.S. and Russia, I thought I would face more hostility as an American. I was positively surprised by how welcome I felt in Russia. My homestay mother frequently told me how much she wanted a peaceful relationship for our two countries, which is an aspiration that I, too, share.”

On her greatest takeaway from the program...
“My greatest takeaway from my time in Russia was my increased confidence. Every day I had to build the courage to go up to people and engage in a language that I did not speak or understand well. I also planned a trip to Moscow which was very intimidating, but it ended up going smoothly. Living in a different cultural environment, communicating in a foreign language, and navigating a new country have rapidly improved my confidence.”

On how this program will affect her career or next steps after graduation...
“Studying abroad in Saint Petersburg confirmed that I would like to spend time living abroad after graduation. I love the challenges and excitement that come with being in an unfamiliar environment. These challenges include making friends in a country where I knew nobody, figuring out how to navigate a new city, and interacting in a new culture. Yet it was these challenges which made living abroad so exciting! I was forced to not be complacent and to constantly learn, which are attitudes I always hope to embrace.”
