New Programs for Summer 2018

New Summer Duke-In Programs in Chile, Cuba, Berlin, and Sri Lanka

For Summer 2018, students will have four new options for summer study abroad: Duke in Chile, Duke in Cuba, Duke Middle East in Europe (located in Berlin), and Duke in Sri Lanka.

Duke in Chile

Earn credit for Spanish 204 and 303 in one summer session

6 weeks/2.0 credits, May 18–June 30, 2018

In the cities of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar, Chile, students will complete the equivalent of Spanish 204 and Spanish 303 with an eye towards the development of linguistic skills in Spanish and cultural awareness related to entrepreneurial themes in Latin America. Valparaiso, whose historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a major educational center home to several universities and technology-based start-ups and social entrepreneurship ventures.

Pre-Req: Spanish 203 or consent of faculty director

Duke in Cuba

Duke in Cuba

The Politics of Salsa: Music, Urban Spaces, and Globalization

4 weeks/1.0 credit, May 20-June 17, 2018

This immersive academic experience in Havana, Cuba is designed for students at the advanced Spanish level. Students will have unparalleled access to Cuban landmarks, musicians, concerts, and guest speakers who are unable to visit the U.S., particularly as they relate to urban spaces. Students will witness in real time the transformation of Cuba in a globalized world with particular emphasis on its impact on cultural production.

Duke Middle East in Europe

An Examination of Middle Eastern Communities in Europe

6 weeks/2.0 credits, July 3–August 14, 2018

On this program based in Berlin, Germany, students learn to critically analyze the political debates about Muslims and Islam in Europe and about refugees and immigrants from the Middle East. We will study the impact of Turkish inhabitants and culture in Germany in order to examine the shifting political landscape of Turkish-German identities and between Europe and the Middle East. The Arab experience in Europe will also be explored from the vantage point of North African communities as well as more recent arrivals from Syria and the Middle East.

Pre-Req: None. No knowledge of German required, courses taught in English.

Duke in Sri Lanka: Global Health in Context

Fulfill a ‘Foundation’ Requirement for the Global Health Major

4 weeks, 1.0 credit, June 3–30, 2018

Based at the University of Ruhuna in Galle, Sri Lanka, this program combines theoretical studies in the classroom with academic excursions to learn from local public health experts, practitioners, community leaders, and members. Working on small teams with students from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Ruhuna, participants will examine four global health topic areas in depth: Maternal & Child Health, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Health of Vulnerable Workers, and Aging.
