Participation Agreement
All Duke students studying away and all non-Duke students studying away with Duke University are required to sign a Participation Agreement in the semester prior to departure. This is a legal document, so GEO recommends that students review the Participation Agreement with their parent/guardian and/or legal counsel.
Three Types of Participation Agreements
- Duke-Administered Privacy Version: Required for programs located in the
European Union and the United Kingdom. This version reflects regional data privacy
regulations (GDPR in the EU and applicable privacy standards in the UK). - Duke-Administered Standard Version: Required for programs in all other
countries. - Duke-Approved and Petition Programs Version: Required for all non-Duke
programs including Duke-Approved and petitions.
Sample Participation Agreements
As a Parent/Legal Guardian:
- While many families contribute to or fully cover program costs, the Duke student (as
an adult) is the individual legally responsible for signing the agreement. - Students are strongly encouraged to review the agreement carefully and share a
copy with a parent or legal guardian, especially if that person is financially
supporting the program.
We provide the sample Participation Agreements above so that students and families can
review the terms in advance. These agreements are updated yearly and are subject to
change. Students can always refer to the signed Participation Agreement in their MyGlobalEd portal.
