What was your favorite excursion?

I loved Duke in New York’s excursion to the Duke vs. Illinois Madison Square Garden basketball game! We went as a group, and it was incredible to experience the Duke energy even away from campus (definitely missed Cameron)! We had so much fun supporting Duke’s win, and it was so special seeing all the alumni and fans cheering alongside us.

How did the experience help you grow?

Coming into this program, I had only visited NY as a tourist on day trips, but living here was a totally different experience. I quickly learned how to navigate the subway (initially overwhelming but now feels second nature), and I got a much better sense of the city’s different neighborhoods beyond just the usual tourist spots.

I also became more comfortable balancing my schedule and just making the most of everything the city has to offer. This program definitely helped me become more independent, adaptable, and confident in exploring new environments!

Where did you love spending time in New York?

I love New York because it truly has everything! Cafes, libraries, parks— you name it! I loved taking the subway to explore new coffee shops or walking around Central Park (especially when it got warmer). My go-to study stop was Pret A Manger, but my all-time favorite cafe has to be Rosetta Bakery (they have the best chocolate croissants). I also love the Hudson Yards area, which has the coolest architecture and so many cute cafes and stores. There’s something for everyone here!

What was your greatest takeaway?

Through all the site visits, guest speakers, and events we’ve attended, my biggest takeaway is the importance of connecting with people, especially with Duke’s immense NY alumni network. There’s such a strong Duke presence here, and I’ve realized how valuable it is to reach out, have conversations, and learn from those who have been in my shoes. So many alumni are willing to share advice, career insights, and even just cool stories about their experiences. This program really showed me how powerful networking can be, not just for professional growth but also for building meaningful relationships anywhere.

What advice do you have for future students?

My biggest advice is to make the most of everything including your NY cohort and the city itself! Some of my closest friends are people I met through this program, and I know we’ll all keep in touch.

But beyond just the Duke community, go out and explore! We got to see Broadway shows, watch the New York City Ballet, ice skate near the Brooklyn Bridge, take a dance class at Steps On Broadway (highly recommend!), go to a comedy show, and just experience so much of what NYC has to offer. Four months fly by, so take advantage of every opportunity whether its meeting new people, trying new things, or just really making the city your own!
