This set of classes will teach you not only a relevant foundation for the financial markets, but also help in cultivating a critical thinking mind applicable to any situation.

Jeslyn Gao, Duke in New York: Financial Markets and Institutions (Spring 2025)

What was your favorite memory from Duke in New York: Financial Markets and Institutions?

My favorite memory from this study away experience was the last day of class before spring break, where we finished taking finals for the first two classes of the semester. Though this might seem counter intuitive, this day held the fondest of memories, as we were able to coordinate a surprise gift/celebratory action for our professor. After the test, our spirits were brightened by sharing happiness with each other.

What was your favorite class activity?

My favorite coordinated class activity was being able to watch the Duke vs Illinois game in Madison Square Garden live. The whole class showed up in Duke spirit gear, and we were surrounded by a mass of Duke friends, family, and alumni that all contributed to the electric energy of the night.

Why did you decide to do Duke in New York: Financial Markets and Institutions?

I wanted to do the Duke in New York program because of three main reasons: testing out living in a big city location, getting to know a more intimate cohort of people I wouldn’t have known otherwise, and being able to go on site visits and networking trips with banks and other companies.

How have your skills changed after this program?

After taking this program, I genuinely feel that I have developed, not only as a student, but also as a peer, and human. This set of classes will teach you not only a relevant foundation for the financial markets, but also, help in cultivating a critical thinking mind applicable to any situation.

What advice do you have for students considering this program?

My advice for students considering taking this program is to follow your gut. If you are considering your options, and find people around you telling one thing, but your heart telling you another, always follow yourself. Take a chance by taking this program. For me and countless others, it has been a pleasant surprise how much we enjoyed our time here.
