What was your favorite memory from your study away experience?
This year was the first Thanksgiving that I experienced without the presence of my family. The thought of it was a bit rough at first, but through speaking to some of my friends I realized that I was not the only one who felt this way. Because of this, we decided to host a Friendsgiving of our own with traditional Thanksgiving food. It was truly one of the best experiences during abroad because it also gave us the chance to share Thanksgiving with our friends who were not from the U.S.
How did Duke financial aid help you achieve your goal of studying away?

This played a major role in my ability to attend. Duke financial aid was extremely generous and gave me the opportunity to engage in and enjoy my experience abroad without typical financial stressors. I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to go abroad and could not have done it without the support of the Financial Aid office.

What is your greatest takeaway from Duke in Venice?

My greatest takeaway has been the importance of openness. The willingness to say yes to new experiences, perspectives, and challenges, changed me in ways that I did not anticipate. The more open I was to these things the more I learned, adapted, and grew. This program showed me that change can only come if you want it to come.
What advice do you have for other students considering this program?
Take the leap. The idea of studying abroad is often so daunting and for good reason, but the uncertainty is what makes this experience so special. Studying abroad in Venice pushes you outside of the traditional academic and social structures allowing the discomfort to truly drive your growth. Use this opportunity to embrace the unfamiliarity and you will grow in ways you didn’t think possible.
