Shaina Lubliner graduates in 2020 with a double major in Public Policy and Theater Studies. She spent the Summer of 2017 participating in the “Duke in Chicago - Arts Entrepreneurship” program.
On why she decided to do this program...
“I chose “Duke in Chicago - Arts Entrepreneurship” because my crew leaders on Project Arts spoke so highly of their experiences on this program. I wanted to take Duke classes for credit in something I was passionate about—in this case, comedy. I also loved that during this program I had the option to do an internship that really appealed to me. And while I ended up taking comedy and acting classes instead of doing an internship, my friends who did the internship really enjoyed it. I was interested in the arts bent of this program because while I was passionate about the arts, I wasn’t sure how I wanted the arts to affect my Duke experience and post-grad life. My Project Arts mentors assured me that this program was a great intro to what life can be like when you pursue an arts-related field, and they were right!”
On how her skills and knowledge have changed thanks to the program...
“I learned so much on this program. I’ve always loved to act so I was super grateful to be able to hone my improv skills at the comedy club, The Second City. I also learned more about film by taking a class called ‘Comedy Film Production.’ However, I definitely learned the most through the Duke course ‘stART Up Project.’ In this course we completely developed our own show, called The 13th Floor. I learned how to write everything from monologues to scenes to songs. I also got to perform in the scenes and direct others in my scenes. As a cohort, we worked together to make the show reflective of us, to communicate our ideas clearly, and to entertain our audience. I was challenged to step up to the plate and embrace the term ‘artist’ by honing my point of view and sharing it with an audience.”
On what she expected this program to be like and if anything surprised her or turned out differently than expected...
“I was surprised by how much I loved the city of Chicago. I grew up on the East Coast, so I was very lucky to travel to New York City many times to see shows on Broadway and to visit the museums. However, I found Chicago to be a much more welcoming city for artists. Art was more available due to lower ticket prices, so I found myself seeing more shows of different varieties—improv, sketch, musical theater, dramatic theater, performance art—almost every night. There was plenty of live, free music in the different parks, since Chicagoans love to be outside in the summer. Museums ranged in size and in types of art so there was something for everyone. I felt like I was truly a part of the arts world even though I was just a student there for the summer. Instead of feeling exclusive, the arts in Chicago welcomed all people. This makes me excited to potentially move back to the Windy City and make a real impact.”
On how the program will play into the rest of her undergraduate experience...
“This program made me more confident in myself as a leader. I learned how to work well with others on artistic endeavors, and over the past two years I've directed and produced musicals for Hoof ’n’ Horn. I’ve also continued to write and recently wrote a one-act play. The professional artists I met during Duke in Chicago became my mentors and have been extremely useful when I’ve been looking for jobs. The friends I made on the program continue to be wonderful collaborators and supporters. This program allowed me to add a second major in Theater Studies and it gave me a better sense of how I can continue to be an artist after college.”
On how this program affected her career interests or next steps after graduation...
“This program exposed me to many different careers in the arts. It was very encouraging to meet professionals who were truly thriving in the arts and entertainment industries. I met people in all aspects of these fields, from documentarians to set designers to actors. These people made me more confident about pursuing the arts. Additionally, this program provided me with networking connections and resources which I’ve used when seeking advice or internships. I’m definitely interested in returning to Chicago to work after graduation, because I absolutely fell in love with the city and the arts culture there!”
