Technology is a vital part of having a successful study away experience. You will use it to stay on top of your academics, communicate with friends and family back home, navigate through new areas, and much more. Below are important tips and instructions for how to use technology successfully on study away.

Duke’s Global IT Checklist

Duke OIT has put together a detailed global IT checklist with items to consider before and during your travels. It is recommended that all students review this guide prior to study away.

Essential items:

Cell Phone Considerations

Consider cell phone plans while abroad. You can consider an international plan with your current plan provider, purchase a SIM card for your current smartphone (before or after departure), or purchase a pay-as-you-go phone after arriving.

Phone batteries can drain quickly while travelling as you are using your phone more than you may normally. Power banks and portable chargers are great to bring along on any travel. It’s a good idea to purchase one and carry it with you especially when you will be out most of the day.

Laptop and Smartphone Security

Review GEO’s post on laptop and smartphone security abroad

Be cautious of connecting to public Wi-Fi on your devices. These Wi-Fi networks are often the sources of information theft. Especially avoid connecting to networks that are not secure when accessing sites or apps with your personal information, like your bank.

  • Never leave your devices unattended in a public space
  • Be thoughtful of your surroundings when entering passwords
  • Consider removing unnecessary applications from your devices to limit the amount of data on your device
  • Make sure you have the most recent operating system downloaded

In general, when traveling at any time, it is always a good idea to use a heightened sense of awareness. Being thoughtful and prepared while using your technology will help keep you safe, and avoid potential mishaps.
