Exploring new destinations is one of the most exciting parts of studying away. Whether you're planning a weekend trip to a nearby city or traveling across borders during a break, it’s essential to take a few simple steps to keep yourself safe and informed.

Required Travel Registration

All students participating in Duke-supported study away programs are required to log any personal travel in the Duke Travel Registry. This includes trips taken during weekends, holidays, or breaks that are not part of your official program itinerary.

Logging your personal travel helps Duke and GEO:

  • Respond quickly in the event of an emergency abroad
  • Share timely safety or security updates relevant to your destination
  • Fulfill Duke’s duty of care to students abroad

The process is quick and ensures you have access to important support while traveling independently.

Additional Requirement for Duke-Administered Programs

If you are participating in a Duke-Administered program, you must also complete the GEO Personal Travel form for any personal travel in addition to the Duke Travel Registry.

This dual registration is required to ensure that GEO and the Office of Global Health and Safety (OGHS) is aware of your travel plans and can assist more effectively if an incident occurs during your time away from your primary program site.

Stay Safe While Abroad

Your safety is our top priority. By registering your personal travel, you help Duke provide you with critical support and resources. Before you go, make sure to also review Emergency Support While Abroad for guidance on what to do and who to contact in case of emergencies.

Enjoy your travels—responsibly and safely!
