Step 1: Before Meeting With A GEO Advisor
- Research your program.
- Search for “Petition” on MyGlobalEd (my.globaled.duke.edu) and click “Apply”.
- Complete the Petition Advising Questionnaire.
- Schedule an appointment with a GEO advisor. The GEO advisor will discuss the viability of the program you want to petition. If your petition is viable, the advisor will open the full petition application after your meeting.
PETITION POLICIES
Please carefully review all Petition Policies before completing the petitioning process.
STEP 2: COMPLETE PETITION & PROGRAM APPLICATIONS
Petition Application
All items in this section must be completed by one of the semester deadlines before the Global Education Committee will review your petition. Be sure to review the Petition Deadlines.
- Complete the General Application in MyGlobalEd. This allows us to request Dean’s and Conduct checks, which normally take up to two weeks to complete.
- If your GPA is 2.7 or below, complete the GPA waiver on MyGlobalEd.
- Upload an unofficial transcript (available via DukeHub) to MyGlobalEd. Read the instructions in your portal about how to submit this item correctly.
- Verify you understand Duke’s International Travel Policy. Check Duke’s Restricted Regions List and digitally sign this item in MyGlobalEd. Program petitions to countries on the restricted regions list must be separately petitioned through the Global Travel Advisory Committee. Contact OGHS for more information on petitioning a program at oghs@duke.edu.
- Finish the Petition Rationale Questionnaire in MyGlobalEd. Explain the academic reasons for choosing this program over Duke-Administered or Duke-Approved programs.
- Obtain transfer credit approval for a full course load of courses:
- Download the Petition Transfer Course Approval form from MyGlobalEd and complete the first step. Then, for each course you plan to take, send the form and a detailed syllabus to geocourses@duke.edu.
- Get course approvals for a full course load, usually 4-6 classes. Ask your GEO advisor what constitutes a full course load.
- If a course requires approval from the Department of Romance Studies (Spanish, French, Italian, or Portuguese), you must also submit the Romance Studies Course Approval Information Sheet. The department will not approve a course without this form.
How Long Do Course Approvals Take?
It is helpful to state the petition deadline in your original request for course approval. Some departments can take 1-2 weeks to complete course approvals. Course approvals in the Romance Studies Departments take a minimum of 2 weeks to process. If you have not heard back within a week (except for Romance Studies), follow up via email.
Pratt Students
Familiarize yourself with the policies outlined in the Pratt School of Engineering Study Away Contract and be prepared to submit a signed contract at the time you commit to a program.
Program Application
- Apply directly to the program/school you are petitioning through its website.
- The deadline is determined by the program (not Duke). Check the program’s website for details.
It is okay to apply to the program before you know whether Duke has approved your petition. Students frequently apply to the program at the same time they are completing their petition.
However, it is also possible to start the petition application process early enough so that you know the outcome of your petition before you apply to the program.
Step 3: Notification Of Acceptance
Petition Application
- You will receive an email from GEO when the Global Education Committee has reached a decision about your petition. Notifications are issued per the schedule on the Petition a Program website.
- Your status within MyGlobalEd will shift from “Pending” to “Petition Approved.”
Program Application
- Program admission decisions are issued by the program/institution (not Duke). Timing of the notification will vary from program to program.
- Make sure you do not pay a deposit to your program until you know that Duke has approved your petition.
Step 4: If Accepted, Next Steps
Petition Application
- Once your petition has been approved, you have been accepted by your program/institution, and you are sure you will participate, digitally sign the Commitment to Participate in MyGlobalEd. Your status will change to “Committed.”
- After you sign the Commitment to Participate, you will be sent the Participation Agreement via AdobeSign. This must be signed by both you and a parent/guardian. Once this is submitted, your status in MyGlobalEd will change from “Committed” to “Enrolled.”
Program Application
- Notify your program/institution that you intend to participate. This may include paying a deposit.
- Pay attention to important forms and deadlines, such as housing applications, course registration, visa instructions, etc.
Step 5: Get Placed On Study Agreement
Study away agreement holds your place and standing at Duke when you study away. It’s vital for billing, financial aid, and course registration. Don’t delay completing these items!
- ITEM 1: Complete and sign the Participation Agreement with your parent/guardian, sent to your email via AdobeSign.
- ITEM 2: Complete the Medical Disclosure Form in MyGlobalEd.
- ITEM 3: Complete the online pre-departure orientation module. This should take approximately 30-45 minutes.
- ITEM 4: Submit the Duke Travel Registry at travel.duke.edu. Make sure to follow the instructions included on this item in your MyGlobalEd portal.
Step 6: When You Return From Abroad
- Contact geocourses@duke.edu to initiate the Evaluation of Petition Coursework, a requirement to process transfer credit.
- Be sure to save all your coursework from abroad for this evaluation process.
- If you are applying for the FL Mode of Inquiry/Transfer Credit from the Department of Romance Studies, make sure to follow the steps outlined on How to Obtain Transfer Credit from the Department of Romance Studies.
