Duke University organizes and supervises the Duke-Administered Programs, either fully or in partnerships with other institutions; and Duke faculty are directly involved. Students earn regular Duke credits and grades in most cases that count towards Trinity and Pratt curricular requirements. Some Duke-Administered programs are hybrid, offering a mix of Duke credits and study away transfer credits from local universities.
Program Development
Most program proposals are initiated by Duke faculty. The faculty member and GEO staff will work in consultation with the academic chair of the sponsoring department or program, the faculty-led Duke Global Education Committee, and other appropriate Duke departments and administrators. Successful program proposals highlight the expertise of Duke faculty and address a curricular need or area of emphasis in the sponsoring department.
Monitoring Quality
All study away programs are evaluated by students and monitored by GEO staff. Individual courses are vetted and approved by academic departments at Duke. In addition, Duke-Administered program courses are assessed by the GEO and the Duke Assessment Office through the use of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences and Pratt School of Engineering course evaluations each term the program runs. Semester and summer Duke-Administered programs are periodically reviewed on-site by internal and external teams of faculty and administrators.
For all programs, GEO conducts routine comprehensive reviews of the following program components:
- Academic rigor
- Quality of cultural interaction
- Health, safety, and security practices
- Support from on-site program staff
