Why did you decide to do this program?

I decided to do this program because when I applied, I was considering a global health co-major. This program in particularly was attractive because I heard very positive reviews from other upperclassmen, and I love the natural beauty of Costa Rica. I also heard very good things about the professor.

How did your skills or knowledge change doing this program?

I am now more independent, more adaptable, and more empathetic. I learned about the cultural values of Costa Rica and adapted to cultural differences. As a group, we learned how to be respectful visitors in another country and travel independently.

What surprised you?

This trip is very much a learning experience. Even during fun excursions, there is always something educational that you can take away from the experience. By the end of the program, you will be shocked by how much you learned even in moments you weren’t in class! You also will be surprised how well you adapt to life in another country, and sad to leave the friends you have made!

What's your greatest takeaway?

This program teaches you so many life skills that you could never develop in a classroom. Returning to the states after this program, I have a completely different worldview. You will interact with inspiring people, hear incredible stories, and encounter new manners of thinking during this program.

How will this program play into the rest of your undergraduate experience?

As a result of this program, I will seek out more experiences that make me feel “out of my comfort zone”. These are the moments in which you learn the most about yourself! I also am going to seek out more community service opportunities on campus, after being inspired by many of the projects I learned about here.

What advice do you have for other students considering this program?

If you are considering this program – do it! It truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity. You are able to see a large amount of the country in just one month, live with an incredibly kind host family, and get an incomparable language immersion experience. Professor Bethzaida Fernández is incredibly supportive and has crafted this program into an amazing experience for her students. You will grow as both a learner and person! Highly recommend!
