Adapting to a new academic structure
Many countries operate on an academic structure that is very different to what students attending a US university are used to. For some programs, there are very few quizzes and assignments, students are expected to independently study and stay on top of the course material with a single test or paper being the only assignment for the entire term. This shift to a new academic structure can be difficult. Below are some resources and steps to help you prepare for not only a new academic structure, but adjusting to a new culture in general.

How will your academic accommodations work abroad?
If you have academic accommodations that you would like to continue while abroad, we encourage you to start planning early.
- Make sure you are registered with the Duke Access and Accommodation Services (DAAS).
- Request that DAAS send your accommodation letter to geosdao@duke.edu. You can do this through the Accommodate portal. Once GEO has received that letter, the GEO Program Manager will reach out to you.
- Be sure to discuss your specific accommodation(s) with the GEO Program Manager if you have any concerns about your accommodation(s) being met while studying away from Duke.
- The GEO Program Manager will provide your letter to the program/institution you will be attending or will assist you in contacting them.
- You may be required to “register” with your host institution or their disability office. You can confer with your designated GEO Program Manager if you are unsure on next steps.
Please keep in mind that Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) laws do not apply when studying away internationally. There may be accommodations that cannot be met while abroad. Host institutions/programs will do their best to meet your accommodation request(s) but do not assume that any or all accommodations can be offered/arranged.
