Experience a semester at Howard University or Spelman College

Trinity College of Arts and Sciences has exchange programs with two U.S. institutions: Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. Duke students may study for a semester at either institution and enroll in a wide variety of courses, for which they will receive transfer credit at Duke.

Application Deadline: November 1 for Spring, April 1 for Fall

Credit Type: Transfer credit

Eligibility: Open to rising sophomores and up. Required minimum 3.0 GPA. Not open to non-Duke students.

Duke Affiliation: Trinity College of Arts & Sciences

Housing: Residence Hall or Apartment

ACADEMICS

Academics

  • You will enroll in a full course load at Howard.
  • A full course load is 15 credit hours in order to transfer back four course credits to Duke. At Howard, this usually means five courses (most courses are valued at three credits).
  • No pass/fail courses are permitted.
  • Students must earn a C– or better in order for courses to transfer back to Duke.

  • Tuition: Students pay Duke tuition. Tuition is billed by the Bursar's Office just like a semester on campus.
  • Room, Board, & Other Fees: Students pay the host institution directly for room and board and any other fees.
  • Financial Aid: Duke students may use financial aid to cover the cost of this program. Please speak with your financial aid counselor.

Housing & Meals

On-campus housing is available at Howard. Students can choose on-campus housing or arrange their own off-campus housing. Howard provides a variety of meal plan choices for students.

This program does NOT have rolling admission. Admissions decisions will be made after the published deadline. Applications must be received by the deadline to be considered.

INCOMING STUDENTS

Attend Duke as a Domestic Exchange Student

Howard or Spelman students interested in attending Duke through the exchange should contact the exchange coordinator at their home institution for instructions on how to apply.
 
Domestic exchange students join regular Duke University undergraduates in the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences or Pratt College of Engineering of Duke University as non-degree students. While at Duke, exchange students are treated as full-time Duke students, taking classes and examinations as Duke students do.
