Alayne Wood

Student Services Coordinator / GEO Advisor

My keen interest in foreign languages and cultures was sparked by my first visit to a library as a young child, where I gravitated toward the bilingual children’s books. By the end of junior high, my academic passion was clear. I went on to study as many languages as possible, though French remained my first love and the focus of both my BA (Eisenhower College) and MA (Middlebury College School in Paris). My initial study abroad experience in Angers, France introduced me to the exciting world of using my language skills to navigate each new environment/culture, and I learned more about myself and the world than I ever thought possible in those 5 months abroad.

I began working in international higher education in 2000, and joined GEO in 2015. I feel incredibly fortunate to have a job that allows me to facilitate meaningful and transformative experiences for Duke students and occasionally use my language skills!

A native of New York's gorgeous Hudson River Valley, I am an avid yogi, meditator, longtime vegetarian and animal rights advocate. I am addicted to kirtan (chanting), and am a proud member of the Durham-based Common Woman Chorus.
