Cassia Caruth is majoring in Linguistics and minoring in Spanish. She studied abroad with Duke in Alicante the summer after her freshman year. She graduates in 2020.
On why she decided to do this program...
“I chose this program because I wanted to enhance my Spanish language skills through cultural immersion. I loved the idea of using the city of Alicante as my classroom. I also knew that by participating in this program I’d be stepping out of my comfort zone, challenging myself to learn in a new environment.”
On how her skills/knowledge changed thanks to the program...
“Obviously my Spanish language proficiency improved. But I also learned more about who I am when I’m in a new environment, unable to rely on my friends and family from home. I became part of a new community—that of my host family. Spending time in this new community taught me to reflect on what I heard and saw; I questioned the norms of the cultures I’m a part of. For instance, I reflected on my Trinbagonian heritage and on the Duke culture. In doing so, I challenged my perceptions on a variety of matters. This program prompted me to ask difficult questions and informed my world view.”
On what she expected this program to be like and what surprised her or turned out differently than expected...
“I was surprised by how close I became to my host mom and her family. Her granddaughter visited the home often and played many local games with me. She patiently explained each game’s rules and showed me the tricks. Yet she ensured that I didn’t beat her! We held a birthday party for my host brother, and I got to meet the extended family. I couldn’t get over how warm the family was; I genuinely felt like I belonged with them. Even now, almost two years later, I regularly call my host mom. We frequently update each other and she always encourages me to visit her. I hope to do so one day! On another note, though I knew that we’d have out of the classroom learning experiences, I was thrilled by the sheer number of activities we had. We went to Granada and to Valencia, watched and participated in a flamenco show that took place in a cave, and took a dance class, among other things.”
On her greatest takeaway from this program...
“I learned so much about the importance of relationships. Spaniards really take the time to develop and be present in their relationships. I observed the daily telephone conversations between my host mom and her daughters; the locals walking and holding hands; the students at the University of Alicante offering to hang out despite their exams. Each night my host mom and I spent hours chatting over dinner, filling each other in on our days and learning about each other’s lives. These tidbits served as reminders to spend time with the people I love and to appreciate life.”
On advice she has for other students considering this program...
“Do it! This is an excellent program which allows for individual growth, fosters knowledge of a different culture and way of life, and indeed promotes Spanish language proficiency. You’ll learn so much about yourself and you’ll expand your worldview. I guarantee that you’ll have a wonderful experience.”
