I spent one of my favorite evenings in Berlin watching the epic, 4 1/2-hour opera Tristan and Isolde at the Staatsoper in the center of the city. Despite being having never seen an opera before and being by far one of the least well-dressed people in the audience, I was captivated by the sheer drama and power of the performance and the unbelievable music.
I was reminded yet again how rich the cultural history of Germany is and how different it is from that of the United States. I was also reminded just how much I enjoy classical music, after moving away from it during my time at Duke. Coming back to school, I'm excited to continue learning about this history and to get back into classical music.
If you're headed abroad, don't hesitate to enjoy local art and music! It may not be what you're used to, but I guarantee it'll be worth it.
