Will Atkinson is a Global Cultural Studies major. The summer before his junior year he studied abroad with the “Duke in New York – Arts & Media Summer Internship Program.” He expects to graduate in May 2020.
On why he selected this program...
“While I’d visited New York a few times before and was familiar with much of the culture that defines it, I’d never spent an extended amount of time getting to know the city. I was excited by the prospect of immersing myself within the city in an academic setting. The focus on internships seemed to be a perfect match for my interests in the writing and media industries.”
On what surprised him or turned out differently than expected...
“Although the internship and courses were an important part of my learning experience in this program, I found that many of my most enriching ‘educational’ moments occurred when I was simply exploring the city on my own, gaining familiarity with the neighborhoods and micro-histories that make New York unique. Whether I was going to a screening at the Anthology Film Archives or trying a local restaurant in Queens, these experiences broadened my cultural horizons, giving me a hands-on education away from the classroom. Also, getting out of Manhattan every once in a while is very important.”
On his greatest takeaway from the program...
“While in New York, I was most fascinated by the city’s evolving culture, and how many of the arts institutions and scenes that marked the city a generation ago have given way to (or directly caused) gentrification, development, and other new cycles of life. Our course on the cultural scenes of the city allowed me to experience these changes from the street level and think critically about what’s been gained, what’s been lost, and what might be in danger as the city continues to change.”
On how this program will play into the rest of his undergraduate experience...
“The professors I worked with during the two summer courses have been valuable connections as I’ve continued to plan my course path in topics like English, Literature, and the arts. The program helped clarify my academic interests as I entered my junior year. It allowed me to complete a minor in English and continue pursuing a major in Literature. In addition, in my extracurricular activities–like writing for The Chronicle and planning events for Duke’s radio station, WXDU–I’ve been able to apply the lessons in editing, communications, and professionalism that I learned in my internship.”
On how this program affected his career interests or next steps after graduation...
“As part of the program, I was an intern at Roads & Kingdoms, an international politics and travel publication based in Brooklyn. I contributed short-form features for its sister website, Explore Parts Unknown, and assisted in online production and fielding pitches from internationally-based writers. Being able to work at an editorial internship for credit gave me valuable early insight into the media industry and what it takes to run a small-scale publication. With this experience, I feel more confident in my decision to pursue a career in writing and editing after graduation. And even after ten weeks of exploring the city, I’m dying to return!"
