While taking part in the Duke in Russia program, I most enjoyed exploring Saint Petersburg on my own. Though I spent most of my time with the group, there were occasions on which I split off and saw what I could see as an individual. Experiencing a new place alone allows you to follow whatever fascinates you the most wherever it may go, and do what you desire.
This has encouraged me to explore the Duke and Durham communities on my own. As a bustling campus in a fascinating city, it would be a shame to not explore and discover. This will then afford me more opportunities to take part in these communities as I come across the myriad chances they offer.
I will continue my studies of Russian, carrying with me the things I learned in the country. Russia is a place of deep culture and long history, which must be acknowledged while studying it.
I would advise prospective students of study away programs to take time to independently explore the place. Provided safety concern are addressed, taking time out on one's own to better familiarize yourself with a place and its people is never a bad idea.
