Studying abroad in Germany, was one of my favorite life experiences. Travelling abroad for the first time was nerve racking, but the experience was absolutely liberating.
I arrived in Germany to take my very first German language class - talk about immersive! Therefore, I applied everything I was learning in class by utilizing the language everywhere I went. I would have small conversations with people at restaurants, grocery stores, on the subway, or anywhere I could find another person. This experience made me a more social and interactive person and I will continue to embrace this, the language, and the culture upon returning to Duke.
Being exposed to another culture has sparked my interest in learning more as well as makes me want to continue sharing my Native American culture with others. I would also like to return to Germany and pursue a photography project on the refugee camps in Berlin, for I also took a photography course in Germany.
My advice for students studying abroad is to not let the idea intimidate you. Instead, venture out of your comfort zone and embrace the amazing opportunity.
