Duke in Alicante was an incredible experience for me. I was able to explore a new country, a new language, and a new culture. My favorite part of this experience was really all of it. I especially loved the daily excitement and the constant learning and exploring. I loved living in Alicante, a small, compact city on the Mediterranean. I loved living with my host mom, a feisty, energetic woman who cared for me deeply despite the language barrier. And, I loved the weekend trips to the bigger Spanish cities, which allowed me to learn how to be a tourist, and gain a lot of culture.
When I get back to Duke, I hope to apply this experience through continuing my Spanish education. I also hope to be able to do more extended traveling after college. I did not realized how awesome traveling was until these 6 weeks.
For me, I wanted to study abroad somewhere where I could be immersed in the language, and this experience was perfect for that. For other students, I would just say: make studying abroad a priority, don’t be afraid to be uncomfortable in a new place/language/culture. I hope I can continue my cultural education throughout my life, and this was a wonderful start.
