Jen Semler graduated in May 2019 and studied abroad one summer with Duke in Geneva. She double majored in philosophy and in public policy.
On why she decided to do this program...
“I decided to do this program in part because I took Philosophy 101 with Professor Rosenberg, who co-runs the Duke in Geneva Program. This class sparked my interest in philosophy, and I enjoyed Professor Rosenberg’s teaching style. These two factors, plus the excitement of spending six weeks in Geneva, motivated me to apply to this program.”
On how her skills/knowledge have changed thanks to the program...
“Moving to Geneva for six weeks was certainly outside of my comfort zone. I went into the program without knowing anyone else who was doing it. As a result, the Duke in Geneva program helped me become more independent and self-confident. The program taught me to think more holistically about the subjects I study. Both program courses—“International Business” and “Political Philosophy of Globalization”—were interdisciplinary and the field trips really put what we were learning into context.”
On what surprised her or turned out differently…
“I was surprised by the amount of freedom the students had outside of classes. It was nice to be able to choose how to spend our time exploring Geneva and other parts of Europe. I was also surprised by how beautiful the French Alps are! That day trip was one of my favorite parts of the program (and I definitely recommend going paragliding)!”
On how the program played into the rest of her undergraduate experience...
“This program shaped my undergraduate experience in several ways. First, because I was able to complete two credits over the summer, my schedule during the school year was a bit more open and flexible. This allowed me to take even more classes that interested me. In addition, this program is part of the reason I decided to major in philosophy and study abroad for a second time, during my junior year.”
On how the program did/will affect her career interests or next steps after graduation...
“Duke in Geneva definitely further developed my interest in philosophy, a subject in which I hope to get a PhD. The program also inspired my post-graduation plans of graduate school outside of the United States.”
On advice she has for other students considering this program...
“This is an amazing program! Keep in mind that you’re taking two Duke classes, so it’s one of the more rigorous summer programs. That being said, there is still plenty of time to relax and travel. My biggest piece of advice is to make sure that you’re interested in the subjects and willing to put in the work.”
