Jennifer "Jen" Ricano is double-majoring in Neuroscience and Linguistics, with a Spanish minor. She studied abroad with Duke in Spain the summer after her freshman year, in Madrid.
On why she decided to do this program...
“I’d taken one Spanish class at Duke and really enjoyed it. And I knew that I wanted to study abroad at least once during my undergraduate career, so I decided that the best place to study was in a Spanish-speaking country. I could hit two birds with one stone. After exploring the Global Education Office's website and narrowing down the programs I wanted to apply to, the Duke in Spain program seemed like the one best suited to my goals and interests. Plus, I had always wanted to visit Spain and learn more about the country, so it was a win-win.”
On how her skills/knowledge have changed thanks to the program...
“Prior to the Duke in Spain program, I didn't have a lot of experience reading or writing in academic Spanish. The program allowed me to improve these areas through literary, historical and artistic angles. I’ve noticed that since Duke in Spain, my academic writing —in English and in Spanish—have improved. My reading level in Spanish has also gotten better.”
On what surprised her or turned out differently than expected...
“I was genuinely surprised at the amount of freedom we were given during the program. We had class Monday through Thursday from around 10am to 1pm, and excursions on Fridays (and sometimes Saturdays and Sundays). Aside from these scheduled things, we were free to do as we pleased. This experience, I think, helped me become more independent. Although I was with a group of students, we were on our own in a foreign country, which helped us mature. Whether it was getting on the right Metro line or deciding when to study, the decisions were ours to make.”
On how will this program will play into the rest of her undergraduate experience...
“Through the Duke in Spain program, my love for the Spanish language was reactivated. The program inspired me to continue studying Spanish—so much so that I declared a Spanish minor.”
On how the program did/will affect her career interests or next steps after graduation...
“I’m a native Spanish speaker, but the dialect that I use every day is very different from the Castellano in Spain. Encountering the different words and grammatical rules led me to a newfound academic interest. During Duke in Spain, I was considering medical school. But, partly due to my experience with the program, I’m now planning to pursue a PhD with a focus on English and Spanish linguistics.”
On advice she has for other students considering this program...
“I may be a bit biased, but I think this is one of the best Global Ed programs! The Duke in Spain program is a wonderful blend of academics that can apply to a wide range of interests. The cultural immersion will change how you see the world, because you will spend so much time interacting with different identities, which you don’t necessarily meet in the U.S. I now view things in a multi-perspective light. Spain is a country with a vast history and a rich culture, so it was the perfect setting for a program focused on Spanish culture. Even if you don't think your Spanish is "native" or if you're scared to go abroad or even if you don’t plan to pursue Spanish in the long-run, I still highly recommend this program. It truly has something for everyone!”
