Abby Sparrow is double majoring in Mathematics and Economics with a Finance concentration. She expects to graduate in May 2020.
On why she decided to do this program...
“I decided to do this program because it was a great way to immerse myself in finance through the two courses and the out-of-classroom experiences we had with our professors. The courses were “Understanding Financial Bubbles and Crises” and “Behavioral Finance: A Taxonomy of Money Mistakes.” Some of the out-of-classroom learning included: visiting firms like Morgan Stanley, Barclay’s, and TDR. We also toured Parliament and the Bank of England. I also decided to do this program because I really wanted to work closely with two of Duke’s greatest professors: John Caccavale and Emma Rasiel. The fact that all of this could happen abroad was an added benefit because I didn’t study abroad during the school year.”
On how her skills/knowledge have changed thanks to the program...
“I learned a ton in just 6 weeks, especially in the courses! We went into extreme detail on all of the big financial crises. Learning how these crises happened helped me understand today’s markets and economy. Being able to weigh in on what happened in 2008 or in 1990 is a great tool. Additionally, behavioral finance has played into almost every single finance class I’ve taken since London. Understanding how and why consumers and investors make certain decisions is so important when making business decisions; this course gave me the knowledge to look at decisions through the behavioral lens.”
On her greatest takeaway from this program...
“My greatest takeaway is that learning doesn’t have to be hard or boring – and it certainly doesn’t always happen in the classroom. I gained more knowledge in six weeks than I ever could’ve imagined, and I had a blast the whole time. The small classroom environment and the interactive nature of the courses were extremely conducive to learning. Additionally, on our after-class outings (visits to banks, tours, etc.), we were able to continue our learning, but in a more hands-on, experiential way. Some of my most memorable tours were when John Caccavale’s wife took us around the Tate Modern museum, when we saw the play Pressure, and when we visited Oxford for the day.”
On how this program will affect her career interests or next steps after graduation...
“Finance is a really broad field and this program exposed me to a wide variety of careers in finance. We had many speakers visit our classes. We heard about everything from real-estate investment, to leveraged buyouts, to mergers and acquisitions, to private equity, and everything in between. There is so much more than investment banking and sales & trading. Hearing from people working in more diverse fields gave me a really good idea of what I want to do after graduating: corporate finance. Being in London taught me that while finance is a passion of mine and is what I want to pursue as a career, I also highly value my other interests. Therefore, having a strong work-life balance is very important to me. I believe that working in corporate finance will allow me to have this balance, while also letting me pair business skills with finance skills. Finally, the program gave me the chance to hone my networking skills, which is critical when applying and interviewing for future jobs.”
On advice she has for other students considering this program...
“Even if you’re nervous – go for it! I was nervous for a number of reasons: I didn’t know anyone going on the trip, I had never been away from home for that long, and it would be my first time living in a huge city. I thought by the time the six weeks ended I’d be ready to go home, but when it was time to leave London, I wanted to stay! I LOVED the London city life. It’s a clean, safe city with so much to do and see. Our flats were convenient and cozy. I made some of my best friends on this trip, so I didn’t even end up homesick. As a side note, even if you’re not sure you want to pursue a career in finance, this is a great chance to explore the discipline and get a taste of what it would be like to work at a big bank. You won’t regret it!”
