During Duke in Alicante, I spent my favorite weekend in Madrid: I visited "El Reina Sofia" to see Picasso's infamous Guernica and the poignant work of David Wojnarowicz, attempted but failed to successfully row a boat for the first time in a makeshift lake in the heart of the city, and witnessed the extravagance of "El Palacio Real de Madrid."
This was my first time outside of the United States, and my love for this study-abroad experience has sparked my interest in spending a semester abroad in Madrid. The almost exclusively Spanish-speaking environment forced myself to constantly speak my chosen language of study in spite of my limited prior experience with Spanish. In comparison to my prior classroom experience with Spanish, this definitely led to a faster and more intense cultivation of my Spanish-speaking abilities.
For any Duke student who wishes to study abroad to study a foreign language, including those who do not have prior experience with their language of study or those who lack travel experiences outside of the United States, do not hesitate to do so if you feel healthy and independent enough to do so!
