The highlight of my experience in Costa Rica was the quality of the time I spent learning with my classmates and professor. Going on a study abroad in a small group really allows you to learn in depth and in unison.
We spent our month in Costa Rica visiting hospitals, neighborhoods, and other sites to evaluate the efficiency and functionality of the socialized healthcare system in the nation. I found that their system, much like ours, has its downfalls and its benefits. Socialized medicine is entirely humanitarian in intention, but limited in ability due to financial woes.
I really enjoyed the Costa Rican perspective on healthcare: that is, that healthcare is a right. After taking this class abroad, I am reaffirmed in my belief that healthcare is an undeniable right.
However, I am troubled by the implementation of this idea, as it seems to be a difficult feat both financially and socially. I hope to pursue my career in medicine with all that I've learned in Costa Rica fresh on my mind as I treat patients and advocate for socioeconomically inclusive policies.
