I've always been a big proponent of studying abroad: the linguistic immersion, the historical sightseeing, and the massive new cultural exposure.
My first voyage across the Atlantic with Duke to Italy did not disappoint any of my expectations. Having never gone abroad, the application process started a cascade in my imagination of everything I would see. I became almost jittery thinking about becoming semi-fluent in a spoken language (which I had also never done before), about the sights and monuments that Italy held in abundance, and even about being able to shape my experience as an independent adult.
To say the least, Duke's program did not disappoint and even exceeded my imagination in unfathomable ways. There is no experience quite like completely understanding someone and responding perfectly to them in a foreign language for the first time, walking into the Roman Forum after years of reading and studying Roman history, or seeing one of the oldest collection of university research and history in the world in Bologna. Studying abroad truly shaped my worldview into something more worldwide, and the experience has been unparalleled since.
To miss an opportunity to study abroad is missing an essential part of the Duke experience, the experience of taking Duke's lessons and bringing them into the surrounding world.
